Counselling
Amid a pandemic or in luxury, ‘stress’ is one of the most overused words in our modern lifestyle. Even though stress could be both constructive or destructive, it is almost always applied only in the latter sense. The term ‘distress’ would be more apt to describe the lifestyle we choose.
The answers for sorrow, ill-being, pain, and destruction often seem to be complicated, if not the most complex, especially in our times. Constantly, we come acrossin the news, of both – the famous, the successful, as well as the poor, the outcasts and the sick ending their lives. More often than not, it is because of a void that cannot be filled by earthly possessions. No one seems to have the formula to having a life of peace, happiness, and contentment. The answer lies in a comprehensive and holistic approach of looking deeper and understanding all the different aspects of ‘Self’.
In the journey of understanding ‘Self’ a few valuable tools and techniques have been honed by the SatSvayam members, drawing from different fields and varied subjects, to present to you, some very dynamic and powerful programs. To name a few – Martial Arts, Transactional Analysis, Vedic scripture and, Neuroscience.
Vedic scriptures
Originally written in Sanskrit are a collection of ancient scripts dating back to about 1500 BC, being the earliest written documents on wisdom. The philosophic maxims of Vedic literature have stood the test of time and are a respected source of wisdom for mankind in general, not just Hindus. The Vedas thus offer a rich collection of spiritual teachings that could lead to self-transformation and understanding one’s place in the Universe, at large.
Neuroscience
On the other hand, is a scientific and logical study of the human brain or more specifically, the nervous system. Neuroscience delves deeper into the human mind, observing biological and chemical processes in the brain and nervous system and its impact on behaviour and cognitive aspects, or, how people think and behave. In that sense, Neuroscience is very closely tied to Psychology, which is the study of behaviour and the mental processes which lead to behaviour—thoughts, feelings, and desires. Thus, the scientific aspects of the physical body form an important part of the journey in understanding the puzzle that is the ‘Self.
Transactional Analysis
Developed by psychiatrist Eric Berne, is a form of modern psychology that examines a person’s relationships and interactions. It is often considered extra-Freudian as it incorporates psychiatry as well as psychoanalysis. It also takes into account, the humanistic and cognitive ideas into promoting mental health through theories like the theory of personality, theory of communication, theory for child development, psychopathology, counselling, consultancy, and management of cognition.Transactional Analysis (TA) is based on the theory that each person has three ego-states: Parent, Adult and Child. These 3 ego-states are used to analyse personal and interpersonal communications, to identify the ideal approach for an intended outcome.
Taichi
It is a form of martial arts, originating from the East, involving movements, breathing patterns and postures. These aspects are performed in a slow and relaxed yet manner, with much importance attached to the breathing techniques. The benefits of practising Tai chi are plentiful, both physically and emotionally. It also helps in reducing stress, improving sleep, posture, body-balance, cognitive functions and also in managing symptoms of many chronic illnesses
